Helping You Process the Past Without Reliving It

EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help people recover from trauma, anxiety, distressing memories and emotionally difficult experiences.

Sometimes life events stay ‘stuck’ in the nervous system. Even when you logically know something is over, your mind and body may continue reacting as though it is still happening. This can lead to anxiety, panic, low confidence, intrusive thoughts, emotional overwhelm, phobias, poor sleep or feeling constantly on edge.

EMDR therapy helps the brain process these experiences in a healthier way, so they lose their emotional charge and no longer affect you in the same intensity.

EMDR therapy is delivered in a calm, safe and supportive setting, helping you move forward without needing to endlessly revisit or talk through every detail of the past.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

hypnotherapy - feel happy and free

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing.

It is a structured psychological therapy originally developed to help people recover from trauma and post-traumatic stress. Today, it is widely used for many emotional and mental health concerns.

Unlike traditional talking therapy, EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess difficult experiences so they become less distressing.

During EMDR sessions, bilateral stimulation is used. This may involve eye movements, tapping or other gentle techniques that help the brain process information in a more adaptive way.

Many people describe EMDR as helping them feel as though the memory is still there, but without the same emotional weight attached to it.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR therapy can be effective for a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and chronic worry
  • Panic attacks
  • Childhood experiences that still affect you today
  • Phobias and fears
  • Low self-esteem and confidence issues
  • Distressing memories
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship trauma
  • Stress and burnout
  • Medical trauma or difficult health experiences
  • Performance anxiety
  • Emotional triggers that seem difficult to control

Many people seek EMDR therapy when they feel they understand their problem logically, but still struggle emotionally.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

When something distressing happens, the brain usually processes the experience naturally over time.

However, overwhelming or traumatic events can sometimes become ‘stored’ differently, leaving the nervous system reacting as though the danger is still present.

EMDR therapy helps unlock this process.

Using carefully guided bilateral stimulation, EMDR allows the brain to reprocess memories so they become less emotionally charged.

This does not erase memories or make you forget what happened. Instead, it changes how the memory is stored, allowing you to feel less triggered, calmer and more in control.

Many clients report that memories begin to feel more distant, less vivid or simply less upsetting.

What Happens During an EMDR Session?

Your first sessions focus on understanding your history, current difficulties and making sure EMDR is the right fit for you.

You will never be rushed.

A large part of EMDR therapy involves creating emotional safety and helping you develop tools to feel grounded and stable before processing difficult experiences.

During EMDR processing sessions, you remain fully awake, aware and in control.

You do not have to describe every detail of your experience out loud if you do not wish to.

Sessions are always tailored to your pace, comfort and individual needs.

Is EMDR Therapy Right for Me?

EMDR therapy may be helpful if you:

  • Feel stuck in patterns you cannot explain
  • React strongly to certain memories or situations
  • Feel anxious without fully understanding why
  • Have experienced trauma, loss or emotionally difficult events
  • Feel triggered by things that logically should not bother you
  • Have tried to “move on” but still feel emotionally affected

EMDR is suitable for many people and can often be integrated alongside other therapeutic approaches.
