Hypnotherapy: it sounds a bit mystical, doesn’t it? Like something you'd find in the back of a vintage health magazine next to adverts for crystals, aura cleansing, and “miracle slimming tea” (don’t get me started on the last one). But here’s the truth: hypnotherapy is one of the most powerful, evidence-based tools we’ve got for lasting change - and I should know. I left a career in the NHS to do this full-time. And no, I don’t own a swinging watch.
So today, let’s lift the lid on some lesser-known facts about hypnotherapy – and I’ll also share why I made it the main therapy I offer. Spoiler alert: it works.
🌀 1. You’re Not Asleep - You’re Hyper Aware
First things first: hypnosis is not sleep. It's not mind control. You won’t cluck like a chicken (unless you're very into chickens, and even then you'd have to want to). In fact, under hypnosis, your brain is in a heightened state of focus - a bit like when you're driving and suddenly realise you can't remember the last three turns, but you're still perfectly safe and aware.
That’s the sweet spot for change. The critical, over-analytical part of your brain chills out, and your subconscious - the part that runs your habits, beliefs, and patterns - is wide open to healthier suggestions. It’s like upgrading your mental software while the system is still running.
🧠 2. It’s Brain-Science Backed
Hypnotherapy isn’t just “woo with a whisper.” MRI studies show real changes in brain activity during hypnosis. Neural pathways linked to decision-making, focus, and habit formation light up — which is why hypnotherapy can help with everything from anxiety and weight loss to phobias, self-esteem, IBS, and even chronic pain.
It’s psychology, neuroscience and therapy rolled into one. With comfy chairs.
🔁 3. It Works Faster Than You Think
One of the biggest reasons I shifted from traditional talking therapies to hypnotherapy? The speed of transformation. I saw clients get results in a matter of weeks, sometimes just a session or two, when they’d been stuck for years.
Now, that’s not to say it’s a quick fix (no therapy worth its salt is), but it’s often more efficient. You get to the root faster, without having to retell your life story 17 times or cry into a box of tissues every Tuesday at 4pm.
🤯 4. You’re In Control The Whole Time
Contrary to what telly would have you believe, you can’t get “stuck” in hypnosis. You’re not under anyone’s power. It’s more like a guided conversation with your subconscious, and you’re in the driving seat the whole way. I’m just your sat nav, helping you steer away from the unhelpful routes and dodgy detours.
💬 Why I Chose Hypnotherapy
Working in the NHS as an Occupational Therapist, I loved helping people make meaningful progress & change. Whilst I was working as part of the cardiac rehab team (helping people to be less stressed and anxious), I often looked up what the latest research was to make sure what I was delivering was up to date and evidence based. Hypnotherapy kept popping up in the search results of articles - of course I dismissed these, thinking they were a load of tosh! How could swinging a pocket watch or clucking like a chicken, help anyone with anxiety?
Then one day, I took a peek, just for a laugh. It blew my mind. I read more, I delved deeper. Then I decided to train in hypnotherapy. I searched for a reputable training school and signed up. One year later I had a diploma in clinical hypnotherapy to add to my Bachelor of science degree. That was 20 years ago this year & I've never looked back.
It combines everything I value: compassion, science, a dash of creativity, and the power to empower people to take charge of their own mental landscape. It allows me (and you) to work with the subconscious rather than against it. And honestly? The results speak for themselves. (So do the relieved, lighter, more confident people who walk out of my therapy room each week.)
💡 Final Thought: Your Mind Is Not The Enemy
Your subconscious mind is always trying to help you — it just sometimes chooses weird ways to do it. Hypnotherapy is about giving it better instructions. Kinder ones. More helpful ones. And when you do that? Change becomes easier. Natural. Sometimes even joyful.
So if you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or like your mind has a mind of its own — maybe it’s time to have a gentle word with your subconscious. I’d be honoured to help with that.
