What is Hypnosis?
Have you ever been so busy
thinking about something, that you have completed a task
without realising it? I.e. you have reached your destination
safely by car but can’t remember the drive? We often refer to this as
being on ‘auto pilot’. This is when a part of your mind
(the subconscious) takes control of the driving because
the ‘busy thinking’ part of your mind (conscious) is concentrating
on something else.
Another example is daydreaming;
you are not asleep, just concentrating on thoughts. This
is often described as ‘being miles away’ or in a ‘trance’,
it often happens when we are watching TV, or recalling memories.
This, is hypnosis.
It is a normal part of everyone’s everyday life.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a way of
using the normal process of a trance like state to help
a person to make positive changes. Hypnotherapy can help with many problems. The more widely
known problems that people seek help with are:
Habits - such
as: smoking & nail biting or compulsions
Phobias - such
as fear of: flying, spiders, animals & certain situations
Weight loss
Stress and Anxiety -
such as: work stress, family/relationship stress, exam/driving
test nerves, guilt, anger, panic attacks
Confidence and
Self esteem
Pain relief &
rapid healing
Hypnotherapy is not just
about helping with problems, it can also help to improve
on the skills you have, and help you to build new ones, in
areas such as:
- Public speaking
- Personal development
- Professional development
- Career progression
- Sports performance
- Motivation

Frequently Asked Questions
Due to Hypnosis stage shows, myths and unscrupulous characters,
some people have asked questions about what is and isn’t
true with regard to hypnosis & hypnotherapy.
So here I will try
to answer those questions:
Hypnotherapy/hypnosis can’t
make you do something you don’t want to, or don’t agree
with (you would not end up clucking like a chicken every
time the phone rings - unless you really wanted to!).
It is safe; there are
no side effects, such as with medication.
Hypnotherapy is not work
for the therapist alone. A person’s active participation
is required for change to occur (the more you put in,
the more you will get out).
A person will not be
asleep when in hypnosis, they will be aware of everything
throughout the session.
A person is able (and usually
does) speak whilst in hypnosis.
